Munskänkarna means cupbearer (an attendant who fills and serves wine cups, as in a royal household).

Munskänkarna is the largest wine tasting society in the world. It has more than 20 000 members. A few hundred members are spread all over the world outside Sweden. Munskänkarna's aim is to nourish the wine culture, spread the knowledge of the wine and wine making and take active part in the wine debate. It is a non-profit organization.

The aim is:

  • to broaden recognition and knowledge about wine and other nobel beverages
  • to work for good and moderate drinking habits.
  • to promote studies and education by:
    • arranging wine tastings
    • giving lectures
    • having seminairs
    • arranging courses
  • to collect litterature on the subject
  • to produce a member newspaper and a home page (only in Swedish)
  • to give possibility to pass different grades in wine knowledge
  • to evaluate travels of interest to different countries
  • to create and maintain contacts with producers and other wine organizations

The society is divided in regions and sections. Sections can be founded in a place where there are enough members to maintain the activity set by the Munskänkarna. Sections in a certain aerea together form a region. Sections can be formed in an other country than Sweden. The leader of the section is choosen by the members of the section.

Our section in Härnösand has around 120 members. I was one of the founders of our section in 1990.
